investigating HOW a four foot tall chimpanzee escaped from his exhibit and was seen on a 15 foot wall. No one was injured and Puiwa the chimp is back with the other chimps tonight. 18-22 53-57 101-107 Call it the chimp mug shot. This is Puiwa... Soon to be 15 years old. The youngest of 8 chimpanzees in the exhibit. His name means surprise, and it fits! He's the primate who caused a stir when he went on the lam at the Honolulu Zoo yesterday. 3:18-3:29 Jeffrey Wilkinson HE GOT OUT OF THE EXHIBIT AND WALKED THE PERIMETER. THE EXHIBIT IS HAS A HIGH WALL AND HE WAS ABLE TO WALK ON THE WALL OF THE EXHIBIT. Honolulu Zoo Director Jeffrey Wilkinson told reporters it was a a visitor who spotted Puiwa and alerted staff. 1:54-2:07 THE CAPTURE TEAM ARRIVED ON THE SCENE IN A MATTER OF MINUTES WHILE THE CROWD CONTROL TEAM CLEARED THE AREA. A PERMITER WAS SET UP TO KEEP PUIWA CONTAINED WHILE THE VISITORS WERE USHERED TO SECURE LOCATIONS. One dart from the tranquilzer gun was all it took to subdue Puiwa.. This is not the first time the chimps have gotten into some monkey business. In 1996 five grabbed ahold of low hanging branch and got out. All vegetation was then cleared back. And in 2004 they kept swinging into the glass enclosure so much it broke! It was replaced as well. Today the chimpanzee exhibit is closed--- caution tape is up. The Chimpanzees are in a back holding area while zoo officials investigate. Wilkinson says Puiwa is doing ok. He says they''ll do a full audit then will take the needed action--- even if it means redesiging the exhibit.. 9:12-9:19 PUBLIC SAFETY IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY HERE. SO WE WANT TO MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THIS ISNT GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. Puiwa was back in his exhibit in less than a hour after his escape. But the chimps were still excited. So zoo officials allowed them to calm down and they all proceeded into their sleep quarters together.
