Miami-Ohio Tabs Notre Dame's Haywood As Head Coach

POSTED: 11:57 am HST December 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Miami-Ohio named Michael Haywood, Notre Dame's offensive coordinator, as its new head football coach on Tuesday.

Haywood replaces Shane Montgomery, who resigned November 29 after the RedHawks struggled to a 2-10 record this season, and whose teams have gone 17-31 overall.

The 44-year-old Haywood has been Notre Dame's offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the past four years. Haywood was a four-year letterman at Notre Dame, from which he graduated in 1986, and will remain with the Fighting Irish for their Hawaii Bowl contest Wednesday against Hawaii. After that, he will leave his alma mater to take his first head-coaching job.

"I'm so excited about joining the Miami family, with a fan and alumni base that is nationwide," Haywood said. "Ohio is a great state for high school football, with tremendous coaches and unbelievable student-athletes. We are looking forward to developing a relationship with the high school coaches and to recruit their student-athletes to Miami University."

Prior to coaching at Notre Dame, Haywood spent two years at Texas (2003-04) under head coach Mack Brown, serving as running backs coach and special teams coordinator. He also spent eight seasons at LSU (1995-2002), coaching in the same capacity under Gerry DiNardo and Nick Saban. Additionally, Haywood has coached at Ball State (1993-94), Ohio (1991-92), Army (1989-90) and Minnesota (1988), where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.

"We are very excited to have Mike join the Miami family," said Miami-Ohio president Dr. David Hodge. "His extraordinary experience with some of the most successful football programs in the country makes him an outstanding choice. He is passionate about the future of our program and has a well-thought out plan to assure success both on and off the field. Mike's values align exceptionally well with Miami, and he is a great fit for our institution."
