Gonzaga Beats Western Kentucky In Wild Finish

POSTED: 5:03 pm HST March 21, 2009

(Sports Network) - Freshman guard Demetri Goodson dribbled nearly the length of the court to hit the winning bank shot with 0.9 seconds remaining to give Gonzaga a thrilling 83-81 win over Western Kentucky in a second-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament.

Goodson had just two baskets in the entire game, but his clutch shot moved the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (28-5) to a contest against top seed North Carolina in the South Regional semifinals on Friday in Memphis.

Matt Bouldin had 20 points for Gonzaga, which also received 18 from Jeremy Pargo.

Orlando Mendez-Valdez notched 25 points for the 12th-seeded Hilltoppers (25-9), who beat Illinois in the first round. A.J. Slaughter added 24 points in defeat.

Steffphon Pettigrew's tip-in off a missed Slaughter three-pointer tied the game with 7.2 seconds left before Goodson got the quick pass and ran the other way, nailing a shot from the left side over Mendez-Valdez. Western Kentucky's final baseball-style heave was well off the mark.

There was some controversy as Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald clearly called for a timeout after Pettigrew's tip-in, but the officials apparently never saw the signal.

Josh Heytvelt had a three-point play with 2:14 remaining for a seemingly insurmountable 81-72 Gonzaga advantage.

The Hilltoppers rallied for the next eight points, thanks mostly to Gonzaga mistakes. Slaughter canned a jumper, and after a steal Mendez-Valdez drilled a three-pointer. Another turnover led to a Pettigrew jam with 58.7 seconds left for an 81-79 difference.

Bouldin missed a jumper at the other end, setting up the wild finish.
