GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartan continue their tour through the ACC, as they invade Blacksburg this evening, for a showdown with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Spartans opened their 2009-10 season in Durham, taking on nationally- ranked Duke last Friday. The result was an expected lopsided loss for UNCG (96-62), which will close out a three-game jaunt through the ACC with a November 20th matchup against nationally-ranked Clemson.

The Hokies on the other hand, put on a strong showing in their season-opener in Cassell Coliseum, topping Brown by a score of 69-55 on Sunday. Following this matchup, Virginia Tech will play four straight games outside of Blacksburg before returning to the Cassell Coliseum for a December 6th matchup with Georgia.

The Hokies have won all five previous meetings with the Spartans, with the last matchup taking place on December 4th, 2007 (67-39).

The Spartans are coming off a 25-loss season and a move to the Greensboro Coliseum is viewed as a plus this year. In regard to that, UNCG has upgraded its schedule. It was evident in the season-opener, as the Blue Devils are one of the nation's top programs. The Spartans provided little resistance on Friday, as they dropped a 34-point decision in Durham. It wasn't as bad as the score made it seem, as head coach Mike Dement got solid debut performances from a couple of freshmen in Kyle Randall and Brian Cole. Ben Stywall was the top scorer for UNCG, netting all 19 of his points in the second half of the game. Stywall was the only double-digit scorer for the Spartans, with Randall finishing with nine points and Cole coming off the bench with eight. The Spartans were beat up on the boards though, getting outrebounded 44-26, while Duke shot an efficient .597 from the field overall.

Seth Greenberg led the Hokies to 19 victories last season and with a couple of the conference's top performers back in the mix, a 20-win season is certainly not out of the question. The team possesses a strong inside/out tandem in guard Malcolm Delaney and forward Jeff Allen. The pair did most of the damage against Brown, combining for 38 of the team's 69 points. Delaney, the top returning scorer in the ACC (18.1 ppg) hit 6-of-12 from the floor, finishing the game with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Allen was 8-of-14 from the field, tallying 17 points in the win. Both Terrell Bell and Victor Davila helped Allen in the frontcourt with eight points apiece.

The Hokies have their dynamic duo in Allen and Delaney and should have little trouble with the Spartans, who simply lack the personnel to get the job done against ACC competition.
