Aggies Clash With Wolf Pack For WAC Title

POSTED: 4:35 am HST March 14, 2009

(Sports Network) - A rematch of the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Tournament title game is on tap for tonight as the Nevada Wolf Pack and the Utah State Aggies hit the hardwood at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

As the second seed in this year's tournament, the Wolf Pack are on the prowl for their third crown since 2004. The team began the journey with a 78-69 victory over seventh seed San Jose State on Thursday night and then defeated a surprising Louisiana Tech squad (77-68) that was labeled the sixth seed in the tourney in the semifinals late on Friday night in Nevada's home building.

As for the Aggies, they dominated Fresno State in the quarterfinals two nights ago in an 85-68 decision, but on Friday the team had to battle back from a double-digit deficit and have a prayer answered in the final seconds in order to survive a 71-70 meeting with New Mexico State. USU, which took part in the championship round of this tournament in both 2006 and 2007, is trying to bring home the trophy for the very first time.

In terms of the all-time series between these two teams, the Aggies own a 27-12 edge after the squads split their two regular season matchups, with each winning on their own floor. Just two weeks ago the Pack posted an 84-71 victory in this very venue.

Of his team-best 24 points on Friday night, 18 came in the second half as Armon Johnson brought the Wolf Pack back in front of the hometown crowd at the Lawlor Events Center. Johnson finished the night hitting 10-of-16 shots from the field, adding six rebounds and six assists for the group. Luke Babbitt tacked on 23 points of his own, hitting all seven of his free-throw attempts in the triumph. Nevada ended the game with 55.6 percent accuracy from the floor and 6-of-14 behind the three-point line in order to offset 15 turnovers. Babbitt and Johnson have been one of the best scoring combos in the conference this season, averaging 17.0 and 15.3 ppg, respectively, and combining for 251 of the program's 555 made free throws along the way. While Babbitt handles the inside game for the Pack with his 7.4 rpg, it is Johnson's job to make sure the rest of the team is involved at the offensive end with his 138 assists.

Trailing by 13 points at the break against the defending tournament champs on Friday night, Utah State steadily worked its way back into contention and then put Tyler Newbold in the spotlight as he knocked down a baseline jumper with less than four seconds remaining in order to push the Aggies into the title game once again. Newbold finished the night with eight points, four rebounds and four assists for the program, yet even with those numbers he ended up as the star of the show. Gary Wilkinson, the WAC Player of the Year, was responsible for 19 points, followed by Pooh Williams and Tai Wesley with 13 apiece, the latter adding seven boards and a team-best seven assists in the comeback bid as well. A 59.1 percent shooter from the field this season, en route to his team-best 17.0 ppg, Wilkinson has also made a killing at the free-throw line (158-of-190) thanks to his physical play in the paint which has also earned him a team-best 6.9 rpg as well. Jared Quayle is responsible for 12.8 ppg and Wesley, another 11.9 ppg. Despite the close call last night, USU is still outscoring the opposition by 10.8 ppg through 33 games.
