Delaware (1-2) At Siena (2-1)
GAME NOTES: The Siena Saints try to work their way back into the win column tonight as they host the Delaware Blue Hens as part of the Philly Hoop Group Classic at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.
Both of these programs have already played preliminary round games in the tournament and both were defeated by the Temple Owls. Delaware took the first hit back on November 14th in a 76-56 final versus the Owls, then it was Siena that fell by four (73-69) to Temple this past Saturday.
For the Saints, the loss to the Owls over the weekend snapped a two-game win streak to begin the 2009-10 campaign. The squad logged victories versus both Tennessee State and Northeastern.
As for the Blue Hens, they lost their first two games of the season, first to Temple and then Bucknell (82-66) before surviving a 97-94 double-overtime bout with the Penn Quakers in Philadelphia on Saturday.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Hens are ahead by a count of 3-2, winning three straight over the Saints. The most recent victory came at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark by a score of 85-59 back in 2003.
Even though the Blue Hens trailed by a 26-8 score just minutes into the contest, shot only 2-of-11 from the field and 11-of-20 at the free-throw line in the overtime periods on Saturday, the team still played well enough to land in the win column nonetheless. Jawan Carter, who converted 19 of his school record 26 free-throw attempts for the game, was the top scorer with 35 points, followed by Alphonso Dawson who tallied 28 points on 10-of-16 from the floor. Off the bench it was D.J. Boney who tacked on 12 points in 31 minutes during a meeting that saw eight ties and six lead changes. Carter has led the team in scoring in all three games so far this season and is putting up 23.0 ppg, thanks in part to his 26-of-33 at the charity stripe. All of his teammates combined have made just 23-of-39 thus far at the line. Dawson is responsible for 15.7 ppg, but even though the Hens have a duo combining for close to 40 ppg, the team is still being outscored by 11 ppg on average.
Settling into the Liacouras Center on Saturday night, Siena was in for a rude awakening as the visitors came up on the wrong end of a four-point decision. Part of the problem for the Saints is that they made just one of their nine three-point attempts, the lone conversion coming from Clarence Jackson. Jackson finished with 17 points, trailing only Alex Franklin who tallied a game-high 22. Ronald Moore accounted for eight points and a game-best 12 assists, against just four turnovers. The issue from three-point range is nothing new for this team because after three games the Saints have converted just 25.8 percent of those tries. The squad has been somewhat lucky that opponents have converted just 29.2 percent themselves and a mere 54.1 percent at the free-throw line because that means the 16.7 ppg by Franklin and the 15.3 ppg from Jackson appear that much larger in the box score.
Siena is built around several high-profile performers and when they all play in rhythm they can be difficult to stop. Expect to see Edwin Ubiles have a bounce-back effort, while Jackson and Franklin continue their strong play.
