Youngstown State (1-2) At Saint Peter's (1-1)
GAME NOTES: In a non-conference tussle, the Youngstown State Penguins challenge the Saint Peter's Peacocks today at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City.
The Penguins have played three games on the young season, losing two of them. Most recently, YSU wrapped up a two-game homestand with a 70-61 loss to Kent State on Wednesday. The Penguins lone road game also resulted in defeat, falling 83-57 at Xavier on November 13th.
As for the Peacocks, they are coming off their first win of the campaign, a 58-34 smothering of Monmouth on Tuesday morning. It was a nice rebound for SPC, which lost to Seton Hall, 53-51, on a long three-point at the buzzer to open the season.
SPC carries a 2-1 lead in the head-to-head series with YSU, although the Penguins collected a 68-64 victory in last season's meeting.
YSU was held without a field goal for an 8 1/2 minute stretch of the second half and it would never recover in a 70-61 loss to KSU on Wednesday. The Penguins shot just 39.6 percent from the floor and their 19 turnovers led to 22 points for KSU. Sirlester Martin and Vytas Sulskis each had 15 points in the setback and they also combined for 13 rebounds. DeAndre Mays got involved as well, recording 14 points and three steals. After three games, Sulskis is the only player on the roster averaging in double digits, with 12.3 ppg.
The Peacocks were outstanding on defense last game, as they forced 18 turnovers and held Monmouth to a horrific 21.3 percent shooting effort from the floor in a 58-34 win on Tuesday. Offensively, SPC drained 44.9 percent of its attempts from the floor and went 8-of-10 at the foul line as well. Wesley Jenkins led the team in scoring for the second time in a row, as he posted 10 points, to go with eight boards. In the team's opener, Jenkins had 16 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the floor.
SPC hasn't scored many points this season, but it hasn't allowed many either. Expect another stingy effort on defense, as the Peacocks make it two straight wins today.
