Oklahoma's Griffin Captures Robertson Trophy

POSTED: 5:26 am HST March 30, 2009

(Sports Network) - Oklahoma's Blake Griffin has been selected as the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is presented to the top collegiate player by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

Griffin was among 15 finalists and was a unanimous choice by voters in all nine geographic districts of the USBWA.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore became the first Oklahoma player to capture the honor. He averaged 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds, as the Sooners finished the season with a record of 30-6 after falling to North Carolina in the South Regional final of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Griffin led the Big 12 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage during the regular season, while ranking fourth in blocked shots. He also averaged 2.4 assists, more than any other Big 12 player taller than 6-foot-5.

The Oklahoma City native set an Oklahoma record with 25 double-doubles during the regular season and set a Big 12 mark with 13 games of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Griffin will be presented with the Oscar Robertson Trophy on Friday, April 3 at the USBWA's annual awards breakfast at the downtown Detroit Athletic Club in conjunction with the Men's Final Four. The breakfast will also honor Kansas coach Bill Self, winner of the Henry Iba Award as the association's coach of the year.
