Louisville, KY -- (Sports Network) - Louisville head men's basketball coach Rick Pitino did not take questions from the media at a press conference held at the university on Wednesday, but did issue a statement apologizing for his indecent actions six years ago.Pitino, according to a report by the Louisville Courier-Journal on Tuesday, told police he had consensual sex and paid for an abortion to a woman who was at the center of an extortion case against him. The paper reported Pitino, who is married and has five children, had sex with Karen Cunagin Sypher at a Louisville restaurant where he had been drinking on August 1, 2003. The newspaper obtained Louisville Metro Police reports, in which Pitino told authorities he gave Sypher $3,000 to have an abortion and denied Sypher's claims that he raped her on two occasions. "I let [my family] down with my indiscretion six years ago. I'm sorry for that and I've told them that every single day," Pitino said in the statement. Pitino also vowed to remain the head coach of the Cardinals. "I plan on accomplishing one thing that is very, very important to me. I plan, regardless of how difficult a situation this is, to coach here at the University of Louisville for as long as I physically can maintain the passion I have for the game of basketball," Pitino said. "I won't coach anywhere else. I don't believe in anything as much as I believe in this university and this state. So, as long as they'll have me, I'm going to coach here." Sypher was indicted by a federal grand jury of trying to extort money from Pitino to the tune of $10 million and lying to the FBI about the alleged incidents. She pleaded not guilty, but a Kentucky prosecutor declined to pursue the case due to a lack of evidence. "Regardless of the truth or falsehood of specific actions that have been attributed to the coach, he's clearly made errors in judgment that have come under intense public scrutiny," said Dr. James Ramsey, the school's president. "We can't ignore these errors in judgment, and they have saddened and disappointed me. As we try to teach our students, when you make a mistake, you admit it and right it as best you can. Coach has done that today. "We hope this closes this chapter; we're all ready to move on," Ramsey added.
