GAME NOTES: Fresh off their first victory of the season the Akron Zips will try to start a winning streak when they take on the Howard Bison this morning in the fourth round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic at the Ocean Center.

The Bison however, come into this contest still searching for their first victory, as the team has dropped its first four games. The most recent loss was an embarrassing, 57-33 setback to Georgia State yesterday.

The Zips opened their new campaign with back-to-back losses to Austin Peay (80-77) and NC State (66-45). However, the team was finally been able to taste victory, as Akron defeated Drake yesterday, 63-59. After this contest the Zips will return home to host seven of their next eight games.

This will be the first-ever meeting on the hardwood between the two schools.

The Bison clearly were not ready for their matchup against Georgia State, as the team posted an abysmal 33 points en route to a 14-point loss. Howard shot a meager 25.6 percent from the field and made only 1-of-11 attempts from long range. Not one player finished in double-figures in the setback, as Kyle Riley led the way with six points. Mike Phillips only posted three points for Howard, but the forward at least collected nine rebounds. Calvin Thompson, the team's only double-figure producer on the season (14.8 ppg), netted just 1- of-7 shots from the floor, finishing the game with three points and four turnovers. Offense has been tough to come by for Howard thus far, as the team comes into this matchup averaging just 57.2 ppg.

Much like their counterpart, the Zips have had trouble finding a groove offensively and head into this matchup averaging just 61.7 ppg behind a lackluster 39.4 percent shooting effort. Anthony Hitchens is the only player posting double figures on the year, as the guard is netting 13.0 ppg. Akron only scored 63 points in its recent matchup with Drake, but fortunately that was enough for the Zips to grab a victory. Akron shot a respectable 46.9 percent from the floor and also made 10-of-26 attempts from long range. Hitchens led the way in the win with 17 points, while Brett McClanahan chipped in with 12 points. Nikola Cvetinovic tallied only seven points, while also grabbed four boards and dished out five assists.

Neither team has performed well offensively, but the difference between Howard and Akron is that the Zips have a few players that can put the ball in the basket when they are hot. Look for Akron to snap out of its dry spell with a solid showing this morning.
