GAME NOTES: Former foes in the Western Athletic Conference, the Hawaii Warriors and the BYU Cougars, renew their rivalry tonight as they clash at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Before making the jump to the newly-formed Mountain West Conference, the Cougars faced off against Hawaii on a regular basis. BYU is making its first trip of the new season after rattling off a couple of victories at the always favorable Marriott Center in Provo.

Tuesday night saw the Cougars follow up a 70-60 season-opening win versus Bradley with an 87-53 rout of Idaho State.

As for the Warriors, they too have yet to hit the road after taking part in their own Rainbow Classic during the first week of the season. The squad began the event with wins over Southern Utah and McNeese State, but on Monday the fun came to an end with an 81-75 setback versus Northern Colorado.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, BYU leads by a 31-14 margin, and this is the first meeting since 1999 before the Cougars left the WAC. In that contest, the Cougars captured an 81-68 victory, giving them two straight wins over the Warriors.

Jimmer Fredette knocked down 7-of-13 shots from the field against Idaho State the last time out, finishing up with 22 points as the Cougars ran away with the overwhelming win at home. Also scoring in double figures for the host team was Jackson Emery with his 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Making an impression off the bench was Tyler Haws who logged 21 minutes and accounted for nine points, six assists, five rebounds, a pair of blocked shots and a steal. Were it not for his 0-of-3 effort beyond the arc there would not have been any criticism for his efforts. In the season opener Haws played 19 minutes in a reserve roll and came away with just four points, all at the free-throw line, adding seven rebounds as well. Obviously the key pieces to the BYU puzzle this season are Fredette (23.5 ppg), Emery (12.0 ppg) and Jonathan Tavernari (8.5 ppg) the latter starting out a bit flat with just 23.3 percent from the floor.

A part of the ESPN College Hoops Tipoff Marathon, the meeting between Northern Colorado and the Warriors was one that few outside of the Sheriff Center were able to watch because it was so late. Using a total of just nine players, Hawaii had four score in double figures, beginning with Jeremy Lay off the bench with his 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting behind the three-point line. Dwain Williams checked in with 17 points and five of the unit's 10 assists, yet he shot only 4-of-16 from the floor and 1-of-8 beyond the arc. Petras Balocka and Roderick Flemings accounted for 12 points apiece, although Flemings made good in just three of his 12 field goal tries and in his case he took only one of those from long range. In his first year with the Warriors, Williams is standing at the top of the scoring chart at the moment with 17.7 ppg, followed by Flemings with 16.3 ppg. Lay is in for 13.3 ppg, but between he and Williams the duo has shot only 15-of-48 behind the three-point line.

It used to be that heading out to the islands would be tough for visitors from the mainland, but now the Warriors have even lost that advantage, which is more than enough reason to think that Tavernari might try to break out for the Cougars in this meeting.

Predicted Outcome

BYU 82, Hawaii 66
