George Washington (9-16) At Richmond (15-13)
GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders look to stay hot when they host the George Washington Colonials in an Atlantic 10 bout at the Robins Center. Richmond enters the game in search of a fourth straight win. Two of those victories came on the road, including Wednesday's 78-68 triumph at Fordham. The Spiders will finish up their regular-season schedule at Charlotte Tuesday night, before returning home to face Xavier next Saturday. At 3-10 in A-10 play, the Colonials are hanging on to the slimmest of hopes to make the 12-team conference tourney, but they obviously need to win out and get some help. They are coming off Wednesday night's 92-88 win over Charlotte in overtime. This is the first of two straight road games for the Colonials, who are just 2-12 outside the Smith Center. GW leads the all-time series, 54-26, although Richmond notched a 60-48 victory in the A-10 opener back on January 10th.
Trailing by two with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, GW's Damian Hollis sank a pair of free throws to force overtime, where he scored seven of his 25 points. The fact that Hollis was able to keep his cool at the foul line should come as no surprise, considering he is the conference's leading free-throw shooter. Rob Diggs scored 22 points in the win, while Wynton Witherspoon added 14, and Tony Taylor finished with 10 points and nine assists. on the season, Diggs is averaging 13.2 ppg and 13.1 rpg, while Hollis is tallying 13.1 ppg and 5.6 rpg. They are both shooting 50 percent from the floor, and are both major assets to have at the foul line late in games. Although they let up 88 points against Charlotte, the Colonials have been a decent defensive squad, holding opponents to 41.8-percent shooting from the floor.
The Spiders boast a dangerous guard tandem in David Gonzalvez and Kevin Anderson. Gonzalvez is a 40.6-percent shooter from beyond the arc and leads the team with 16.0 ppg, while Anderson is tallying 15.6 ppg. The Spiders are putting up 70.4 ppg and are a plus-2.5 in turnover margin, but they are a minus-3.5 in rebounding margin and are also shooting just 67 percent from the foul line. The latter two statistics have bitten them on a few occasions throughout the season. But the Spiders had no such issues Wednesday night, as they used a 55.6-percent shooting effort in the first half, including 6-of-10 accuracy from beyond the arc, to build a lead as large as 16. Anderson had 18 points and Gonzalvez scored 17, while Justin Harper led the charge off the bench, finishing with 14 points.
The Colonials essentially need a miracle to qualify for the A-10 tourney, and given their road record this season, they aren't likely to get it done against a team that beat them by 12 at home earlier this season.
