NCAA Game Summary - Charleston Southern At Georgia Tech

POSTED: 6:09 pm HST December 22, 2004

Isma'il Muhammad scored a game-high 16 points to lead ninth-ranked Georgia Tech to an easy 90-48 win over Charleston Southern at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Luke Schenscher added 14 points and Jarrett Jack contributed 13 for the Yellow Jackets (8-1), who rebounded from their loss to Gonzaga over the weekend to win for the eighth time in nine games this season.

"For us to be good this year, we're going to have to have some depth," Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt said. "I look at the other night against Gonzaga, and I relied on too few guys to score."

Kurtis Rice scored 12 points and Nathan Ball added 11 for the Buccaneers (1-6), who have dropped five straight contests.

Georgia Tech jumped out to a 12-5 lead on Jack's three-pointer with 17:35 left in the first half and the margin grew to 12 points on Ra'Sean Dickey's basket moments later. However, the Buccaneers used a quick 8-0 spurt, capped by Donnell Covington's three, to close within 21-17.

The Yellow Jackets then regrouped and reeled off 10 quick points, keyed by four from Muhammad, to claim a comfortable 14-point edge. The margin continued to grow as a pair of free throws by Muhammad stretched the lead to 40-21 with 3:19 remaining in the stanza.

"It's pretty much like a freight train hitting you and you are kind of standing on the tracks waiting for it to come because I think that's pretty much the way it feels," Buccaneers coach Jim Platt said.

Georgia Tech eventually carried a 43-27 lead into the locker room.

Schenscher scored 10 points and Muhammad chipped in nine for the Yellow Jackets, who made 14-of-23 field goals in the first half (61 percent). Ball had five points to pace Charleston Southern, which hit on 42 percent of its attempts in the opening 20 minutes (11-of-26).

Georgia Tech led 45-29 early in the second and then broke the game wide open as it used an 11-0 run. Jack had seven points during the spurt that gave the Yellow Jackets a commanding 56-29 advantage with 15:58 left in the contest.

The gap increased to 30 points later in the second half and the Bucs never threatened again. Georgia Tech led by as many 44 points in the waning minutes.
