GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars have traveled to Richmond to battle the Spiders in the quarterfinal round of the College Basketball Invitational. Charleston has won nine of its last 10 games to improve to 27-8 overall, and the program has won at least 20 games for the 22nd time in the past 30 years. The Cougars, members of the Southern Conference, are making their eighth postseason appearance, as they have played in four NCAA Tournaments and three NITs. They showed a great deal of toughness to knock off Troy in a 93-91 final in the opening round of this event on Wednesday and figure to be both well-rested and focused for this evening's affair. Representing the Atlantic 10 Conference, Richmond is 19-15 overall this season and has won seven of its last nine outings. In the first round of this tournament, the Spiders upended St. John's in a 75-69 final. They are playing in the CBI for the second straight season and making their 16th postseason appearance, including the sixth in the last nine years. The College of Charleston has won two of the three all-time meetings with Richmond, and the most recent matchup took place in 2000.

The Cougars tied a school record with 16 three-pointers against Troy on Wednesday, as they shot a staggering 16-of-24 from behind the arc. Charleston was outscored by seven points from the foul line, outrebounded by five boards and committed three more turnovers than did the Trojans, but the long-range shooting was clearly the difference in the game. Andrew Goudelock was tremendous for Charleston, as he finished with 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-8 from the three-point range. Tony White Jr., who hit 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc, had 24 points for the Cougars, and Marcus Hammond added 12 points off the bench. Goudelock is just a sophomore, but he has already eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau, becoming the first CofC player to score 1,000 points over two seasons since the program joined the Division I ranks back in 1991. He is averaging 16.9 ppg this season on 43.9 percent accuracy from long range. As for White Jr., he checks in with 12.1 ppg.

Richmond relies heavily on Kevin Anderson and David Gonzalvez to be productive at the offensive end every time the team takes the floor. Anderson is scoring 16.7 ppg to go along with a team-high 93 assists, and Gonzalvez provides 15.8 ppg and a club-leading 4.8 rpg. That rebounding average is very low for a team leader, and the Spiders are grabbing 4.9 fewer boards per contest than the opposition. On a positive note, they have committed 112 fewer turnovers than their foes. In the six-point win over St. John's on Wednesday, Richmond overcame a 14-point first-half deficit. The Spiders shot a stellar 12-of-20 from three-point range, helping them overcome a 48-25 rebounding disadvantage. Gonzalvez nailed 5-of-7 three-point tries en route to 27 points, and Anderson contributed 20 points. As for Jarhon Giddings, he posted 16 points.

Richmond gets the nod in this clash, as it will treat the home crowd to a narrow victory. Expect plenty of three-point attempts by both teams.
