Sheard Leads Chattanooga To SoCon Title

Chattanooga, TN -- (Sports Network) - Keyron Sheard scored 18 points as part of a balanced attack, and the Chattanooga Mocs won the Southern Conference Tournament with an 80-69 victory over the College of Charleston Cougars.Stephen McDowell contributed 15 points for Chattanooga (18-16), which won its 10th conference title and first since 2005. Ty Patterson had 12 points, and out of the 10 players the Mocs put on the floor, eight of them had at least six points. Chattanooga used a 20-0 run to start the second half to take control of the contest. The Mocs also went 22-of-27 from the free throw line, compared to just 5-of-7 for Charleston, to win the title. Tony White, Jr. had a game-high 31 points for Charleston (26-8), which had won eight straight games and beaten Davidson in the tournament semifinals. Andrew Goudelock added 15 points in a losing effort. The game was tied at 34 at halftime, and Chattanooga opened the second half on a 20-0 stretch to take control of the game. Patterson had three three-pointers during the run, and the Mocs had a 54-34 advantage with 13 1/2 minutes to play. Charleston answered with a 14-0 run, cutting its deficit to six on Antwaine Wiggins' layup with just under 11 minutes to go. Sheard put Chattanooga ahead, 63-51, on a three with just over six minutes left, and the Mocs cruised to the title down the stretch. Game Notes Charleston had beaten Chattanooga, 86-77, earlier this season...The Mocs beat Elon in the quarterfinals and Samford in the semifinals to reach the championship game...The Cougars shot just 40.0 percent from the field...Davidson had won the last three Southern Conference titles...The Mocs are now tied with Davidson for the most all-time Southern Conference Tournament titles....Kevin Goffney had 10 points for the Mocs.
