NCAA Game Summary - Texas-El Paso At Nevada

POSTED: 8:03 pm HST March 17, 2009

(Sports Network) - Stefon Jackson's jumper with 4.4 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Texas-El Paso Miners slipped by the Nevada Wolf Pack, 79-77, in the first round of the 2nd Annual College Basketball Invitational at the Lawlor Events Center.

Jackson finished the night with a game-high 26 points for the Miners (20-12), shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-6 behind the three-point line. Also hitting for double figures for the visitors were Randy Culpepper and Arnett Moultrie with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

The Wolf Pack (21-13) were paced by Luke Babbitt with a double-double consisting of 20 points and 10 boards, followed by Armon Johnson with 18 points and six assists. Malik Cooke contributed 10 points and eight boards in the setback as well.

Shooting an even 50 percent from the field and 9-of-18 behind the three-point line in the first half, the Miners moved out to a 46-43 advantage at the break.

In the second half UTEP dropped to 2-of-4 beyond the arc and just 5-of-10 at the free-throw line, needing the shot by Jackson in the waning moments to put it over the top.

Nevada led the way at the free-throw line with an 18-8 scoring advantage, but at the same time allowed the visitors to convert 11-of-22 shots out on the perimeter.

With the victory the Miners will now take on the Northeastern Huskies in the next round of the tourney on Monday.
