Hawaii is offering a rebate program this spring to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with energy-efficient models.

The state will offer mail-in rebates toward the purchase of Energy Star-qualified appliances. The program, run through Hawaii's utilities, is already in effect for the islands of Hawaii, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu.

Rebates available for residents of those islands are as follows:

• Ceiling fan - $40
• Clothes washer (limit 1 per household) - $50
• Dishwasher (limit 1 per household) - $50
• Refrigerator (limit 1 per household) - $50
• Window AC unit - $75
• Ductless split air conditioner - $110
• Central air conditioning maintenance - $50

Residents must include both the new appliance sales receipt and proof that the replaced products were removed and recycled.

The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative is also offering $50 rebates during the following staggered periods:

• Refrigerators -- Feb. 1 to March 31
• Clothes washers -- May 1 to June 30
• Dishwashers -- Aug. 1 to Sept. 30

The state's program is one of 56 State Energy-Efficient Appliance Rebate Programs, popularly known as Cash for Appliances, that are being set up in the United States and six U.S. territories with the help of federal stimulus money.

Hawaii will receive about $1.2 million of the nearly $300 million in stimulus funding available nationwide from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
