Organizers and sponsors are gearing up for the "Susan G. Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure" in October.

To inspire participants, breast cancer survivors shared their stories at a gathering in Waikiki Friday night.

"I just got an e-mail from someone who was writing to us from Philadelphia because someone in her family was 28, didn't have any money but was able to get her mammogram. So, when you hear stories like that obviously I'm very passionate about it," said chairwoman Nina Rappeline.

KITV is one of the sponsors for the event.

The event takes place at Kapiolani Park Oct. 18 at 7 a.m.
