HONOLULU -- A dozen Hawaii high school students are in Taiwan when a devastating tropical storm hit.They are attending the Formosa camp in Taipei. The Taipei Economic and Cultural office confirmed all are safe and away from harm.The tropical storm swept through central and southern Taiwan, killing at least six people.
Another six were hurt and six more were missing, officials said.Tropical Storm Kalmaegi dumped heavy rain on central and southern Taiwan, causing problems in areas near the city of Taichung.The eye of the storm passed the island Friday, but storm clouds lingered and forecasters warned of heavy rain and the possibility of mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas.The Taipei Economic and Cultural office Hawaii residents concerned about relatives in Taiwan can contact their office. The consulate will relay information to its headquarters in order to locate and confirm the status of relatives. The number is 595-6347.
