A 58-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, both from Wailuku, died in a crash involving multiple motorcycles and two trucks in Maalaea Sunday.
Maui police said the crash was located on North Kihei Road near Honoapiilani Highway and happened around 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
Investigators said the motorcycles involved were participating in an organized St. Patrick's Day Motorcycle Rally, and there were more than 50 motorcycle riding together in this pack.
A motorcycle driven by Abel Ventura, Jr. was traveling south on North Kihei Road when it crossed the double solid yellow lines. Ventura collided into a 1988 Toyota pickup truck traveling north toward Honoapiilani Highway.
The motorcycle continued south in the northbound lane and collided with another pickup truck that was traveling north. Ventura died at the scene.
After being struck by Ventura's motorcycle, the 1988 Toyota pickup veered to the left and ended up in the path of other southbound vehicles. The pickup collided with three motorcycles, one of them driven by Marlene Debnam. Debname died at the scene.
Two men were treated for injuries and released. A woman suffered a fractured left arm and injuries to her left knee and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The involvement of speed, alcohol and drugs are under investigation.
This is Maui County's fifth traffic fatality in 2012 compared to two at this same time last year.
