Strong Trade Winds Whipping Up Dangerous Fire Conditions

 UPDATED 9:18 PM HST Jan 29, 2012

Warm, dry and breezy trade wind weather is making conditions ideal for fires to spread rapidly.

A red flag warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for the drier areas and leeward sections of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.

National Weather Service forecasters say a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warn temperatures will create rapid fire growth potential if a fire starts.

Fire officials advise everyone to be careful with barbecues and if using open flame.
