On Thursday, some of the world's best big wave surfers gathered at Waimea Bay on Oahu's north shore for the opening ceremony of the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf invitational.
The holding period is from now untill February 29.
The surf contest can only go if the waves are 40-foot faces and bigger.
Some of the surfers in this year's contest are defending champion California native Greg Long, Hawaii surfers Kala Alexander and Sunny Garcia and world-renowned surfer Kelly Slater. The last time the contest was held was in December 2009.
