WAILEA-MAKENA, Hawaii -

Maui County officials say they are in the process of closing a three-mile stretch of shoreline near Wailea-Makena after a shark sighting Wednesday afternoon.

Lifeguards reported seeing an 11-foot tiger shark at Kamaole Beach Park III, according to officials with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Ocean Safety crews are closing one mile north of Kamaole Beach Park I and one mile south of Kamaole Beach Park III.

Signs are also being posted at the beaches.

DLNR says its personnel is helping to warn beachgoers and swimmers about the possible threat.
