A team of scientists say Hawaii has a new wettest spot.
The University of Hawaii scientists say Big Bog on Maui's eastern slope above Hana has about 402 inches of rainfall a year. That now makes Kauai's Mount Waialeale the state's second-wettest location, which has 394 inches of rainfall a year.
Climatologist Tom Giambelluca said the rainfall at Big Bog went unnoticed until 1992 when a rain gauge was installed at the its 5,400-foot-high location.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday the study confirms climatologists' observations that Hawaii has gotten drier over the past 100 years.
But in the last few days, Kauai has seen other areas with more rain than at Waialeale. Hanalei and Wainiha each had higher rainfall totals during the 48-hour period that ended Tuesday morning.
