Laie Ranch Rescues Animals; Needs Help To Continue Work
At the Hearts for Animals Wellness Center in Laie, there is no shortage of chores for JoAnn Chisholm-Dueno but after five years, she is still driven to care for the animals. Most of the animals are rescued from abusive environments.
However, feeding and housing eight horses, pigs, dogs, a duck and chickens is not only time consuming, the costs are mounting and the ranch requires a major overhaul.
?We want to have a more secure fencing; chain-link fencing or pole fencing would be great; that's sturdy,? said Chisholm-Dueno.
Chisholm-Dueno said shelter is also necessary and equipment is needed to clear more grazing room. She said recent heavy rains left the ranch muddy, exposing hidden dangers.
?We are always kind of looking and patrol as well to make sure there is nothing that would hurt the horses,? said Felix Dueno, ranch caretaker.
The newest additions to the ranch are Isabella nicknamed the Diva Donkey, Hank Ross and Gordon. They all came from the Big Island. The Kona Knightingales were suppose to go to the mainland along with a herd of more than 120 feral donkeys but the three were adopted and are fitting in well.
?We got sponsors for them and they shipped them over and they got their shots and they were vetted out and the boys were castrated,? said Chisholm-Dueno.
Chisholm-Dueno said she eventually wants to start a program on the ranch to help sick children and adults.
She is also hoping the horses could one day help heal at risk-youth.
?My objective is, I want to get this place in working so I can start bringing out foster kids out here so I want them to be able to be with the horse so they can get that mutual love and respect,? said Chisholm-Dueno.
It costs Hearts For Animals roughly $2,500 a month to feed and house the animals. If you would like to volunteer or donate to the ranch you can contact them through their website at www.hearts4animals.org or www.HeartsForAnimals.com
