Maui police said a 21-year-old Lahaina man died Tuesday afternoon after a motorcycle crash.
It happened on Honoapiilani Highway north of Kaanapali Parkway just after 3:30 p.m.
Police say the motorcyclist was traveling toward Napili on Honoapiilani Highway and traveling at a high rate of speed, between 80 and 100 miles per hour, weaving in and out of heavy traffic.
The motorcyclist elected to pass a van on the right entering the bicycle lane. The motorcyclist crashed into a parked truck shortly thereafter.
The man was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The motorcyclist is identified as Wayan DeCosta.
Police say he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Speed is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Police are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were also factors.
This is Maui County's second fatality this year compared with none at the same time last year.
