The Pentagon announced Wednesday it will name three new guided missile destroyers after three wartime heroes, two of whom have Hawaii ties.

Staff Sgt. Rafael Peralta was a Marine based at Kaneohe.

He died at the age of 25 in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 during one of bloodiest battles of that war.

He was already wounded when he pulled an enemy grenade to his body. His action took his life but saved the lives of several other Marines in his unit.

He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross after being denied the Medal of Honor.

Also being honored is lieutenant John Finn, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Japanese attack on Oahu in 1941.

Finn was credited with shooting down a Japanese plane at the Kaneohe air base despite having 21 shrapnel wounds.

He died in 2010 at the age of 100.

A third destroyer will be named after Ralph Johnson, another Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War.
