The U.S. Coast Guard suspended their search for a missing kayaker Friday after the owner of the kayak found floating of Kualoa Beach Park called in to report they were safe.
The Coast Guard received the call at 7:30 a.m. from the owner of the eight-foot blue kayak that was found about a mile off-shore near Ka'a'awa Thursday.
The call for rescuers came Thursday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. after local residents noticed the kayak off-shore and found an empty dive bag, weights and a paddle on the kayak, but with no kayaker.
Rescue boats and helicopter were deployed by both the Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department who continued searching into the night.
The Coast Guard added that situations like this (where no one is in immediate danger), which cost countless man hours and tax payer dollars, can be avoided by using the Paddle Smart identification system.
