For nearly three decades Joe Magaldi has played Shaka Santa at Honolulu Hale.
"29 years ago former Mayor Frank Fasi used to hold a Christmas party at Natsunoya Tea house and he looked at me and said, 'You're Santa Claus.' When Fasi would tell you something, you'd do it," Magaldi said.
When the event moved to city hall as part of the city lights celebration, the red suit was replaced with a red aloha shirt and fur trimmed surf shorts. Mayor Fasi died in 2010, but Magaldi says he has just about seen all 28 of the mayor's grandkids come through the line for a picture over the years.
The former city transportation director and current head of the transit commission knows a thing or two about getting key cargo from place to place.
"Mele Kalekimaka. You believe in Santa Claus right? Sure! You believe in me Ha! Ha! Ha!? Magaldi joked.
His fans come in all ages, shapes and sizes.
All nationalities and faiths come for a holiday snapshot and fun.
Magaldi says last year he was delighted when a young woman asked to sit on his lap and produced a picture of Santa Joe in his younger days.
"It was the picture of her when she was six months old on my lap. And so I let her sit on my knee and take a picture," Magaldi said.
He admits there was also a bit of trouble when a second Santa crashed the event last season. He says security took care of it.
But that Santa lodged a complaint.
"This is fun and it?s free and if the people come they done have to worry they have to wait in line a little while, but not long,? Magaldi said.
And did we mention that Santa Joe has runner?s legs? He just completed his 18th Honolulu Marathon.
It all part of his holiday training, and he said he is only slowing down a little bit.
