HONOLULU -

It's a rematch for the top job at Honolulu Hale.

Former acting mayor and city managing director Kirk Caldwell wants his old job back and has officially thrown his hat into the ring for Honolulu Mayor.

Caldwell said he wants to be mayor again because he can do the job and the public deserves better.

"I'm going to be your hands-on mayor. I'm going to approach problems seriously. I'm going to be transparent about the issues," he said.

He described himself as a "roll up your sleeves type of guy" and said style is the big difference between himself and Mayor Peter Carlisle, who defeated Caldwell in a special election.

Even though he's pro-rail, Caldwell is worried about how the project is being handled and he pointed to a medical waste spill on the Leeward Coast.

"I can't think of anything more important than a mayor to do than picking up the trash and Mayor Carlisle cannot do this," he said.

Caldwell said during the last election he only had a month to organize his campaign so he did not have time to get his name out.

He believes time is on his side for this election.

"I'm confident. I'm wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think I could win," he said.
