A Kamuela man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 3-year-old relative who was left in his care.
3-year-old Marley Makanani was found by rescue personnel unconscious with labored breathing at her home Friday. She was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital where doctors discovered bruising indicative of abuse and notified police.
Later that night, Makanani was flown to Oahu for further treatment at the Kapiolani Hospital for Women and Children. She died from her injuries Sunday at 5:14 p.m.
Police arrested the man watching over Makanani, Ezekiel Wakinekona of Kamuela on charges of abuse of a household member. A 2-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl living at the home at the time were taken into protective custody at that time.
Following the death of Makanani, police charged Wakinekona with manslaughter in addition with two counts of family abuse for injuries found on the children taken into protective custody.
His bail was set at $60,000. His initial court appearance was held Tuesday.
